Pakistan tests ballistic missile

Hatf VI missile test March 2006 The Pakistani military says it has successfully test-fired a short-range ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear device.

They say the missile has a range of 290kms (180 miles). It was launched from a secret location at the end of a training session.

The firing of the Ghaznavi missile was the third such test in as many weeks.

Pakistan and its neighbour India - both nuclear powers - routinely carry out missile tests.

The recent tests have come amid speculation about the security of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal.

A report last year recommended that the US send in special forces to help "secure the Pakistani nuclear arsenal".

President Pervez Musharraf has dismissed fears that his country's nuclear weapons could be acquired by Islamist militants.
