Five killed in Assam flash floods

The flood struck the town of Sonari and villages around it in Assam's northern region bordering the states of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Four children and a man were drowned after they tried to flee to higher ground on a raft. The raft capsized.

Millions have been affected by recent floods across parts of South Asia. Hundreds of people have died.

Assam government spokesman Dinesh Deka told the BBC that many tea gardens in the state had been submerged in the flooding.

The Towkok and Teok rivers were flowing above the danger mark, he said.

The Bimalapur-Lumding road has been closed after floods disrupted communication links between Assam and Nagaland.
