Unruly scenes disrupt Indian parliament

Indian parliamentary proceedings have been disrupted as opposition members attacked the government, led by the Hindu-nationalist BJP, over an incident which sparked sectarian violence in which about two thousand people were killed.

The Home Minister, L.K. Advani, faced unruly heckling over the destruction by fundamentalist Hindus of a mosque at Ayodhya in the state of Uttar Pradesh seven years ago.

Outside, police used tear gas and canes to fight back rival Muslim and Hindu demonstrators who converged near the parliament building.

In Ayodhya, police imposed tight security at the site of the mosque, and said they made over forty arrests as groups from both communities gathered to mark the anniversary.
