Leader of Afghan mujahideen dies

A statement from his son delivered to media organisations in Pakistan said he died on 19 July, but did not say where.

Maulvi Yunis Khalis was a strong supporter of the Taleban and had been in hiding since declaring jihad (holy war) against US-led forces in 2003.

Yunis Khalis headed a faction of the Hezb-i-Islami during the war against Afghan Communists and Soviet troops.

in 1988 he led a delegation of mujahideen leaders to the United Nations and met US President Ronald Reagan.
