Former Kashmir minister attacked

Two of his guards died in the attack while Mr Naik received bullet wounds, police said.

Mr Naik, who belongs to the opposition National Conference, was on his way to a relative's house in Tral when his car came under gunfire, police said.

Mr Naik has been taken to a hospital in the summer capital, Srinagar.

Two other people were also injured in the attack.

Mr Naik has held several key positions in the state government and was also a speaker in the assembly.

On Friday four civilians were killed and 17 others injured in a series of grenade attacks by suspected militants in Srinagar.

More than 60,000 people have been killed since 1989, when an armed separatist insurgency began in Indian-administered Kashmir.
