Arko Datta, who works for Reuters, took the photo in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, on 28 December.

It was chosen from nearly 70,000 images entered by more than 4,000 professional photographers in 123 countries.

Awards jury member, Kathy Ryan, said it was "a graphic, historical and starkly emotional picture".

Exhibition

The World Press Photo organisation announced its awards on Friday in Amsterdam.

Jury chairman Diego Goldberg said Datta's photo was "a true spot news picture with a strong photographer's point of view".

The Mumbai-based Datta wins a 10,000 euro ($12,800) prize.

An exhibition of photos that have won awards will open in Amsterdam in April and then travel to 85 countries.
