Two die in Nepal embassy shooting

Map of Nepal indicating location of Kathmandu Two security guards have been killed and another injured in a shooting incident inside the Indian embassy in the Nepalese capital, police say.

Embassy officials said the incident came amid an altercation between the guards, who were all Indian citizens.

The embassy's chief spokesman stressed there was no outside attack, and that no external party was involved.

The spokesman told the BBC that the incident happened within the residential quarters of the embassy.

Wounded guard 'stable'

The embassy - one of the largest in the city - said in a statement that the pre-dawn shootings were "an internal affair with no outside involvement".

Officials say an investigation has begun into the incident.

"Last night an altercation occurred among a couple of guards," the embassy statement said.

"One of these guards in the early hours of the morning shot at one of the other guards, in the process killing two and wounding the third."

The three guards were part of an Indian paramilitary force, assigned the task of securing embassies.

The wounded guard is reported to be in a stable condition in hospital.

The BBC's Charles Haviland in Kathmandu says that details of what happened are still emerging.

One police official told the AFP news agency that the shootings followed "a hot exchange of words between the Indian security guards".
