Pakistan crash kills 38 pilgrims

At least 38 people have been killed and eight wounded in a truck crash near the north-western Pakistani town of Abbotabad, according to police.

The passenger carrying truck plunged into a ravine while travelling from the hill resort of Murree, a police official told AFP news agency.

It was carrying pilgrims who had participated in a ceremony at a shrine of a Muslim saint.

Road accidents are common in Pakistan, with hundreds killed annually.

The police said the driver of the truck lost control at a sharp bend at Nathiagali, a hill resort some 80km (50 miles) from Pakistan's capital Islamabad.

Army and police teams took all night to recover the bodies from the ravine after the accident late on Sunday, police said.

They said the dead included 10 women and a child.

Earlier reports had said the pilgrims were travelling in a bus.
