Nepal soldiers jailed for abuses

Nepalese soldiers Fifteen soldiers in the Nepalese army have been imprisoned for human rights abuses, the army said on Thursday.

Six others soldiers have been dismissed from the army for excesses committed during security operation against the Maoist rebels.

The army says investigations into a number of other cases are continuing.

There have been persistent criticisms of the army over its alleged high-handed behaviour during its operations against the rebels.

National and international human rights organisations have reported cases of rape, illegal detention and unprovoked killing of the civilian.

Demotion

Military spokesman Deepak Gurung said the 15 soldiers have been jailed for up to seven months following an inquiry into allegations of human rights abuses.

Another soldier has been demoted, he said.

Mr Gurung told journalists in Kathmandu that the army as a whole was determined to avoid all human rights abuses.

However, he said the possibility of excesses by some individuals could not be ruled out. army was determined to avoid human rights abuses.

The Nepalese army was deployed to tackle the long-running Maoist insurgency two years ago, after the police failed to check the spread of the rebellion.

More than 8,000 people have died since the rebels started fighting in 1996 to replace the monarchy with a communist republic.
