'China softening stance on Tibet'

One of the spiritual leaders of Tibetan Buddhism, who now lives in exile in India, has said he believes China is changing its attitude towards Tibet.

In an interview with the BBC, the Karmapa Lama said he believes China is now keen on finding a permanent solution to the problem.

The Karmapa Lama's comments came after envoys of the Dalai Lama visited Tibet and held talks with senior Chinese officials there - the first such talks in 20 years.

The Karmapa Lama fled Tibet three years ago, when he was only 16, and sought asylum in India, saying that he was forced out of his homeland because of Chinese repression.
