More arrests in Pakistan gang rape

Police in Pakistan have confirmed that two more men have been arrested in the case of a woman who was gang raped on the orders of a tribal assembly in the province of Punjab.

A police spokesman said that three of the four men directly accused of committing the rape were now in custody.

On Saturday, the police arrested one of their own officers for failing to prevent the rape, after the Supreme Court strongly criticised the police, saying that the crime could not have been committed without police knowledge.

More than twelve people are now in custody in connection with the case.

Tribal elders are accused of ordering the woman to be gang-raped to punish her family over allegations that her brother had had illicit relations with a woman of a different social status.
