Teachers taking part in BBC News School Report can gain credit for their work by including it in their Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
Recording the skills, knowledge and experience developed during the project will assist teachers when applying for jobs and promotions.

CASE STUDY
Teacher Katie Addison explains how School Report helped her gain a new job with increased responsibility.
"Working on the project helped me achieve my latest career move, as the staff in my new school were extremely impressed with what I helped to achieve in my previous role at Shepshed High School in Leicestershire.
I was able to talk in detail about the project during my interview, so much so that the pupils who interviewed me commented on my 'obsession' with radio, and the head created a position for me instead of giving me the job I'd applied for!
I'm now looking forward to taking on the project again with a new set of eager Year 8s. Hopefully the whole year will be involved as I'm implementing the lessons into the Key Stage 3 medium-term plans. I'm also adopting the lessons plans to suit Year 10s, using this as part of media within English.
BBC School News Report is fantastic, I feel confident in delivering it to my students and colleagues because there is so much support from the BBC, and of course because it proved to be a massive success.
My previous students won an award; I just hope that this year we can do as well!"

Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) www.tda.gov.uk The TDA have created a new set of professional standards for teachers, which replaced the previous classroom teacher standards in September 2007. This framework is designed to help teachers plan their careers and identify their future development with their line managers. You may wish to use your School Report work to meet these standards.
Teacher Learning Academy www.gtce.org.uk/tla The Teacher Learning Academy, provided by the General Teaching Council (GTC) for England, incorporates a four-stage framework for career development. You may like to use your School Report work to meet one of these stages.
Teachernet www.teachernet.gov.uk Teachernet's CPD resources offer practical help for teachers at all stages of their careers.
The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) www.schoolsnetwork.org.uk The SSAT offer a variety of CPD resources.

Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) www.ltscotland.org.uk LTS are an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Scottish Executive. They have a website dedicated to CPD.
The General Teaching Council (GTC) for Scotland www.gtcs.org.uk The GTC for Scotland is the independent regulatory body for the teaching profession in Scotland. The website contains information about CPD including Chartered Teacher Status, Professional Recognition and the Teacher Researcher Programme.

CPD IN WALES: USEFUL LINKS

CPD Funding Programme www.gtcw.org.uk This programme, offered by the General Teaching Council for Wales, seeks to provide teachers with an opportunity to identify their own professional development needs and to receive funding to meet these requirements.
Funding for projects is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and teachers may apply at any time under one of these project categories:
Professional Development Bursary
To be spent on a professional development activity of the teacher's choice, including visits within and outside the UK to observe good practice and exchange ideas.
Teacher Research Scholarship
To undertake action research in an area relevant to the individual's or school's development.
Teacher Sabbatical
To enable a teacher to undertake a prolonged period of study or develop transferable skills in a different environment.
Professional Development Network
To enable a group of teachers to work together on a regular basis.
Group Bursary
To enable a group of teachers, from the same school, to work together on a regular basis. This grant is available on a pilot basis until March 2008.

Regional Training Unit (RTU) www.rtuni.org The RTU has been commissioned by the Department of Education to provide a programme of training and support for the implementation of Performance Review and Staff Development (PRSD).
The General Teaching Council (GTC) for Northern Ireland www.gtcni.org.uk The GTC for Northern Ireland endorses a competence-based approach to teacher education. Having completed its review of the existing teacher competencies, it has set out 27 competence statements and made a number of important recommendations to the Department of Education. School Report can be used to meet these competencies, as they are developed.
Professional Development Bursaries www.gtcni.org.uk Bursaries are available to individual teachers who wish to carry out a professional development activity, and to teachers wishing to work with colleagues on an inter-school basis. More information about the bursary scheme is available on the GTC for Northern Ireland website. The phase 3 bursary deadline closed on Monday 17 September 2007.
