Panorama commissioned a survey of more than 800 parents and youngsters to find out how teenagers used the internet and what their parents knew about it.
The GfK NOP phone poll spoke to 411 youngsters aged between 11 and 16 and 451 parents.
The key findings were;
The research was carried out between 11 and 30 October 2007 for use on Panorama: One Click from Danger transmitted on Monday 7 January 2008.
More recently a study by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre found that 25% of children and young people surveyed said that they had met up in the offline world with someone with whom they had made initial contact online (based on a partial sample of 6000 respondents).
