Paloma Picasso

In a HardTalk Extra interview screened on 10th February, Gavin Esler spoke to Paloma Picasso about how she emerged from her father's shadow, establishing herself as one of Europe's foremost designers.

Paloma Picasso is the daughter of the man regarded as the greatest artist of the twentieth century, Pablo Picasso.

In a family full of personal disasters, she's also succeeded in building her own career - and identity - as a designer.

But has she thrived because of, or despite, the Picasso legacy?

In a candid interview, she talks to Gavin Esler about the inspirations and tribulations of growing up with the father of modern art.

Autobiographical Art

Art expert Tim Hilton has called Picasso "the most autobiographical of artists".

Those in Picasso's immediate circle of family and friends frequently found themselves becoming the subjects of his pictures.

Paloma Picasso recalls for Hardtalk Extra the experience of modelling for her father.

She also tells Gavin Esler how it felt as a child to be with her father at the kitchen table, where he could absorb himself in his sketching at a moment's
notice.

She tells Gavin Esler that "it is right, and out of respect" that she looks on her father's pictures today as great works in their own right, rather than as memories of her childhood.

HARDtalk Extra can be seen on BBC World at 0430 GMT, 0830 GMT, 1130 GMT, 1530 GMT, 1930 GMT, 0030 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30.
