A new look for Breakfast

Probably not the roof of Television Centre in West London.

But that's exactly where our designers went when they were briefed to come up with a new look for Breakfast.

After three years, our editor felt it was time for a change of image for the programme. Especially as we were on the move to a brand new and more cost-efficient studio.

The idea was to bring a new warmer feel to the programme, to match the rapport between our presenters.

There's a new set, new music - and new opening titles.

"We looked around the UK and even considered using photographs of the sunrise in Miami, which is quite spectacular," says Breakfast's Chief Graphics Designer, Bill Calder.

"They were fantastic - but there was too much cloud."

Eventually, the design team settled on the sky above one of the BBC's own buildings beside Television Centre in London.

"We took 360 still photographs and then, using computer graphics, we've mixed them and put them on a loop," says Bill.

Those images are then projected onto a 90 foot wall in the new Breakfast studio.

At the heart of the news

Breakfast's new home is the studio which is already used by the One, Six and Ten O'Clock News.

But - because of the sky - it will feel very different. And, it's also more cost-effective to run than our old studio.

Says Breakfast's editor, David Kermode:

"Breakfast's relationship with its viewers is all about warmth and trust.

"We're hoping to achieve a look which is really warm, engaging and beautiful."

Our re-design goes from top to bottom, from the programme's theme tune to new umbrellas and mugs which will be used on screen.

Breakfast's graphics designer Bill Calder will only admit to one disappointment: that he lost the battle replace the mugs with much classier bone china cups and saucers: the editor baulked at the cost.
