Explosion hits UK Yemen embassy

An explosion has rattled the British embassy in the Yemen.

An investigation is now underway, following the incident which happened in the Yemeni capital of Sana'a on Thursday night.

It comes a day after a suspected suicide attack on a US destroyer in the port of Aden, which killed six US sailors and left 11 missing and 35 wounded.

The British consul general in Aden said there were no casualties but security had immediately been stepped up.

The explosion, which reportedly happened in the embassy courtyard, shattered windows and caused damage to some offices.

"We are not sure what caused it," said consul Bob Hunter.

He said the embassy was not sure if it was a bomb and stressed it could have been a problem with the generator.

There have been unconfirmed reports that a device was thrown over the external wall of the compound.

A team of investigators is now being sent from London.

It is not yet clear whether the explosion is linked to the bombing of the US warship.
