Jordan police accused over death

Jordanian anti-riot police, 9/11/09

Five Jordanian police officers will face trial after a man died on Sunday of injuries allegedly sustained while in their custody, officials have said.

The Minister of State for Information Affairs, Nabil Sharif, said the case had been be referred to the judiciary.

The family of Sadim Saud have accused the police of torturing him following his arrest in Amman last month.

The 20-year-old's friends and relatives clashed with police in the east of the capital after he was buried on Monday.

Police said that tear gas was used to break up the crowd, who set cars alight and damaged shops. At least six policemen were injured during the demonstrations, they added.

Mr Saud, who was a street vendor, was arrested following an argument with an on-duty municipal worker in the Jabal al-Hussein commercial centre last month.

He was held in custody by the Criminal Investigation Unit at the al-Hussein Police Station.

Mr Saud's family said he was admitted to hospital after being released, but had succumbed to his injuries on the weekend.
