Death sentence for Yemen attacks

A Yemeni court has sentenced six suspected al-Qaeda militants to death for their role in a series of attacks on Western targets over two years.

Ten others, including four Syrians and a Saudi, were sentenced to between eight and 15 years in prison.

The attacks included two in which seven Spanish and two Belgian tourists died.

There were also attacks on the US embassy in 2008 and a compound housing foreign workers, as well as attempted attacks on an oil installation.

The 16 men shouted out religious chants as they were sentenced.

It is not known whether they will appeal against the verdicts.
