Fatal building collapse in Egypt

Rescue workers at the site of the collapsed apartment building in Alexandria, Egypt

At least 12 people have been killed and six injured after an old apartment building collapsed in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, police say.

The incident happened while people were sleeping in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the Mustafa Kamel district, east of the city centre.

A local news agency said one of the bodies removed from the rubble was a woman holding her baby.

Rescue workers are continuing to search for survivors.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

Building collapses are not uncommon in Egypt because construction regulations are often ignored.
