Militant killed in W Bank clash

A Palestinian militant has been shot dead by Israeli troops in an overnight clash near Qalqiliya in the northern West Bank, the Israeli army has said.

The army said its soldiers responded after being attacked when they went to investigate reports that an Israeli civilian had been shot at in his car.

The driver and one Israeli soldier were injured in the incident.

Palestinian reports said the gunman who was killed was a member of the Islamist militant movement, Hamas.

Correspondents say the incident could put further pressure on a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
