Checkpoint attack kills 10 Iraqis

Ten Iraqi soldiers have been killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the province of Diyala, Iraqi police say.

The attack, which took place in Mindili, 110km (65 miles) north-east of Baghdad, also wounded 13 soldiers.

It is not known who carried out the attack but the US military blamed the killings on al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Al-Qaeda has tried to establish itself in Diyala since being driven out of western Iraq and Baghdad by Sunni councils and coalition troops.

In violence on Sunday, the wife of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Hiro Ibrahim Ahmed, escaped unhurt after a bomb exploded near her motorcade in Baghdad.

Four of her bodyguards were injured in the attack.
