Seven killed in Iraq bomb attacks

A series of co-ordinated bomb attacks has killed at least seven people and injured more than 20 in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

Most of the victims died when a suicide bomber crashed his car into an Iraqi police patrol in the city centre.

Another bomber blew up his car next to a military checkpoint, while a third attacker detonated a fuel tanker.

A car bomb was used in a fourth attack. The US military says Mosul is the last urban stronghold of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Iraq's third largest city, it has recently been the focus of a renewed security drive as US and Iraqi forces try to target al-Qaeda fighters.

The US military says militants have regrouped in Mosul since being forced out of Baghdad and western Iraq.

Earlier this month, 42 university students were kidnapped near Mosul but were freed unharmed several hours later.

In March, the body of Paulos Faraj Rahho, the Chaldean Catholic Archbishop of Mosul, was found in a shallow grave in the city two weeks after he was abducted.
