Civilian dies in West Bank clash

West Bank and Gaza map Two Palestinian men have been killed during a raid by Israeli troops in the West Bank, Palestinian officials say.

One of the men was in his 70s - hit by a stray bullet while he was in his home, officials say.

The Israeli military expressed regret at the death of the elderly man but said it was not clear who shot him. His family blamed Israeli troops.

The other man killed in the raid was described as a militant from the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

This is a militant group linked to the Fatah faction led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Witnesses said the militant was killed in an exchange of fire with Israeli troops in the old city area of Nablus.

Late on Monday, security officials in Egypt said they had discovered two tunnels running under the border with the Gaza Strip, near the town of Rafah.

Officials say a number of weapons and 5kg of heroin were seized.

One of the tunnels was said to be more than a kilometre long.

Israel has often criticised the Egyptian authorities for not doing enough to secure the border, something Egypt denies.

Such tunnels have for years been used to smuggle weapons and contraband into the Gaza Strip.

The territory has been under the control of the Islamist Hamas movement since June.
