Militant dies in Israeli ambush

Funeral in Jenin Israeli troops have killed a commander of the militant Islamic Jihad group in the northern West Bank.

Mahmoud Abu Obeid was driving through Jenin when undercover agents sprayed his car with bullets, witnesses said.

The Israeli army had no immediate comment. The death comes a day after police said they foiled a planned suicide bombing in Tel Aviv.

Israeli Radio said the Islamic Jihad leader in Jenin - a militant stronghold - had dispatched the suspected bomber.

Witnesses quoted by Associated Press said an Israeli combat helicopter was seen in the area at the time.

An Islamic Jihad official has confirmed that the group had been planning to carry out the Tel Aviv attack, three weeks after its last attack in the southern Israeli town of Eilat.

Israel periodically sends undercover agents dressed as Palestinians to carry out military operations in the occupied West Bank.
