Iraq governor hurt in bomb attack

The convoy carrying Maamoun Sami Rashid al-Alwani was hit on the way to his office in the western town of Ramadi.

Hospital officials said the bodies of three bodyguards were found at the scene, and several others were hurt.

Elsewhere, the US military says it has killed 10 in a raid on an insurgent "safe house" near the town of Balad.

Three of those who died in Balad, north of Baghdad, were wearing explosive suicide vests, the US said.

The incident reportedly happened early in the morning as troops searched for a leader of the militant al-Qaeda group in Iraq. There were no US casualties.

In other violence:

• Police said two people died and five others were injured when a bomb left inside a minibus exploded in a busy market in Shorja, Baghdad

• The bodies of four people with signs of torture and bullet holes in their heads were also found in Baghdad, police said

• Another Iraqi civilian and a US soldier were killed in separate roadside bomb attacks.

Surprise attack

The clash in which 10 insurgents were reportedly killed occurred about 40km (25 miles) north of Baghdad.

It began when a sleeping guard awoke and pointed a pistol at a US patrol, the army said.

The troops shot and wounded the man, but he detonated his suicide vest and was blown up, the US command said in a statement.

Two more people were shot dead inside the house, the US said, and seven others were killed after leaving the building.

Money, grenades, rifles, a pistol, ammunition, explosives, a machine gun and other suicide vests were recovered from the house, the army reported.
