Fatal gun battle in Kuwait City

Kuwaiti security forces on patrol on Saturday 29 January A gun battle has erupted in Kuwait after police raided a building where militants were believed to be hiding.

Three suspected militants and one officer were killed in the shoot-out in the Salmiyah neighbourhood, state television reported.

"I locked the door and didn't let them in... Bullets have hit the windows in my office," a Syrian woman told Reuters from one of the targeted buildings.

The US and other foreign embassies had warned on Saturday of possible attacks.

Many foreigners live in the Salmiyah district.

There has been a spate of violence in Kuwait which some say is linked to militants connected to al-Qaeda.

Two weeks ago, one Saudi gunman was killed in a battle with Kuwaiti security forces.

Five days earlier, two security officers and a suspected militant were killed in a clash.

Those incidents led to a round-up of suspected militants and the seizure of arms and explosives.
