Greece has imposed a limited smoking ban in public places from Wednesday 1 July, the third attempt in 10 years to stamp out the habit in Europe's biggest-smoking nation, where more than 40% of adults smoke.

Under a new law passed last year, smoking will be banned in hospitals, schools, vehicles and all public spaces. Cigarette advertising will also disappear from city centres and roadsides.

However, following a last-minute amendment to the law, thousands of restaurants and bars over 70 sq m (750 sq ft) will be able to build sealed-off smoking areas, as long as they remain “totally separate”.

And smaller restaurants, like this one, can choose to ban non-smokers instead.
