The Israeli offensive in Gaza has sparked worldwide anti-war demonstrations, with tens of thousands of people joining rallies in the US, Middle East and Europe - including in Paris pictured above.

In Washington, several thousand demonstrators gathered outside the White House to protest against what they see as the Bush administration's apparent backing of Israel.

In London, there were violent scenes as police confronted several hundred protesters who threw stones and smashed windows outside the Israeli embassy.

Police said up to 20,000 people marched through central London to protest against the Israeli action in Gaza. The BBC estimated the figure could have been as high as 50,000.

Across Germany, more than 40,000 people protested against the Gaza offensive, while arrests were reported at similar rallies in Denmark and Paris.

Meanwhile in southern Lebanon, thousands of demonstrators heard angry speeches against Israel's military action at a rally organised by the militant group Hezbollah, which supports Hamas.
