Israel has continued its ground and air attacks in the Gaza Strip for a fifth day, after a week of bombing, in a bid to force Palestinian militants to stop firing rockets into Israel.

A three-hour halt in Israeli military operations was ordered to allow Gaza residents to look for food, fresh water and fuel, and to bury their dead. Israel said the lull would take place daily.

Gaza residents rushed into the streets to find food, visit relatives and friends in hospital and inspect damage caused by shelling.

The Israeli forces have met resistance from militants from Hamas and other groups in battles around Gaza City and other towns in the densely-populated coastal strip.

Seven Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the start of Israel's military operation there. Four people have been killed by rocket fire into Israel.

Israel has hit Hamas government buildings, security compounds, smuggling tunnels and weapons stores, and says it is not targeting civilians...

But the increasing civilian casualty toll has drawn international condemnation. Diplomats at the UN are trying to forge a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The Palestinian health ministry says nearly 200 children have been killed since the Israeli offensive began 11 days ago. Hundreds more have been injured.

Hospitals in Gaza have been overwhelmed trying to treat about 3,000 people wounded in the Israeli operation. Doctors say they are running short of essential supplies and people are dying as a result.
