Tess Daly was overjoyed that Strictly Come Dancing beat the X Factor, Britain's Got Talent and Dancing on Ice in the most popular talent show category.

Comedian Griff Rhys Jones presented Top Gear's racing driver The Stig with the award for best factual programme.

The Doctor Who cast

Doctor Who was named most popular serial drama for the fourth year running. But fans of the BBC show were in for a huge surprise later on in the ceremony.

David Tennant

Doctor Who star David Tennant was unable to attend the awards. However, he still stole the show as he announced he was leaving the series as he collected his award for outstanding drama performance.

EastEnders cast
10 of 11
BBC soap EastEnders beat rivals Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks in the most popular serial drama category. Barbara Windsor said the win was "better than sex".

Former Hear'Say members Suzanne Shaw and Myleene Klass bumped into each other on the red carpet.
