Anti-government demonstrators in Thailand have entered the third day of their occupation of a government complex in Bangkok.

Protesters have defied a court order to vacate the site, but as the rubbish mounts, conditions are deteriorating.

Chamlong Srimuang - a leader in the People's Alliance for Democracy, the group which organised the protests - has told the world's media that protesters will stay put until the government resigns.

To that end, protesters have built barricades around the complex, and some have formed a human chain around it.

At present the situation is calm, if tense. But the protesters are armed with makeshift weapons - here, a piece of metal piping - and there is always the risk of violence.

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has wavered on how tough to be against the protesters. At the moment, riot police are just relaxing and watching proceedings from outside the compound.

For the time being, both sides seem content to sit it out, in the hope that their opponents will be the first to give way.
