Emmerdale actor Clive Hornby, who has died at the age of 63, was the soap's longest-running cast member. He wore the flat cap he was given on his first day, in 1980, throughout his time as Jack Sugden.

In 1982, Jack married childhood sweetheart Pat Merrick (Helen Weir), seen to the left of his mother Annie Sugden (Sheila Mercier) in this 1984 publicity shot.

By 1990, when this shot was taken, Pat had been killed in a car crash leaving Jack to bring up their son, Robert (Christopher Smith). Hornby is pictured next to on-screen brother Joe (Frazer Hines).

Jack got together with mobile librarian Sarah Connolly (Alyson Spiro) and had they had a child together - Victoria (Hannah Midgley) - before they got married in 1994. This picture was taken in 1999.

Tragedy followed Jack and second wife Sarah died in a barn fire in 2000. He found happiness again with his 2004 wedding to Woolpack landlady Diane Blackstock (Elizabeth Estensen).

Jack’s five children included adopted son Andy, played by Kelvin Fletcher (third right). In 2007, their characters celebrated the 500th anniversary of the village of Beckindale with a pageant.
