The Magazine asked readers to devise a mascot for the 2012 Olympics in London. David Oliver sent in Ben, based on the famous landmark and dressed in the obligatory Union Jack shorts.

Marc Choi devised Mr Belvedere: "Part Dickensian gentleman, part world-class athlete. His gherkinesque torch is constructed with recycled materials and powered by renewable, low-carbon fuel."

"This is my mascot for the London 2012 Olympics," says Terry Scott. "He's called Sock. I hope you like him."

Martin Mostert: "My chosen mascot, Rustle, highlights the red squirrel's threatened status. It wouldn't be too far-fetched to portray a squirrel in any sporting/athletic code."

5 of 8
Katy Grierson devised Taffy and Treacle. "Why do we have to think of some rare or exotic animal to be a mascot - what is wrong with cats? We are a nation of pet lovers after all."

"This is Ambassador Bird, Avery is his first name," says Bill Weber. " He is the dove of peace reimagined as the mascot for the Olympics."

7 of 8
David Ayres sent in Charlie Chav, the aerosol can. "It has a nice symmetry with the 2012 logo which looks like a piece of street graffiti. He sports a Union Jack waistcoat and Burberry cap."

8 of 8
Miwako Ohara got this idea from London's Olympic logo. "The 2 and 0 reminded me of a horse's head and a lion's mane, which led me to think about the unicorn and lion on the coat of arms."
