Now in its 240th year, the exhibition features a wide range of recent work by both established and emerging artists in all media including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and architecture.

Around 1,200 artworks are on display in the six-week exhibition, the majority of them for sale. Budding artists were invited to submit their efforts to London's Royal Academy in March.

Highlights include a memorial gallery dedicated to the late American-born artist RB Kitaj. The Royal Academy courtyard, meanwhile, plays host to Promenade, a monumental sculpture by Sir Anthony Caro.

More controversial exhibits, not pictured here, include a video of a naked woman using barbed wire as a hula hoop and a piece depicting a sexual act between a naked woman and a zebra.
