The 200m (656ft) long Xstrata walkway enables visitors to enter the canopy of sweet chestnuts, limes and deciduous oaks.

Birds, insects, lichens and fungi that rely upon the trees can be viewed from the walkway.

Designed by Marks Barfield Architects, the architects behind the London Eye, the walkway also gives an aerial view of London landmarks such as Wembley Stadium.

Kew Gardens staff hope the walkway will enable visitors to appreciate the importance of trees and our need to protect and nurture them.

The walkway opens to the public on Saturday, when another attraction will also enable visitors to study the soil beneath the trees.
