Celebrations held to mark May Day

Across England, celebrations have been held to mark 1 May, an important date in the English countryside calendar.

In Norwich, the Fiddlesticks Morris dancers welcomed May Day with an early morning display in the city centre.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Magdalen Bridge in Oxford for their annual May Day celebrations.

Every year people gather on and around Magdalen Bridge to hear choristers sing hymns at dawn from the tower at Magdalen College.

About a dozen people defied warnings and jumped off the historic bridge. Safety concerns meant the bridge was closed, but jumpers took the plunge when it reopened to traffic.
