Across the world, crowds have gathered to commemorate the 93rd Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) Day.

On 25 April 1915, troops began the bloody fight for the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. More than 100,000 soldiers died - about 11,000 of them were Anzacs.

The day had extra poignancy for some of the older veterans, who may not take part in another march.

Thousands of younger Australians and New Zealanders made the pilgrimage to Gallipoli to attend a remembrance service.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was among the crowds at a commemoration in Canberra.

British veterans, who fought alongside Anzac soldiers during both world wars, also remembered fallen comrades in the UK.

Australia's land forces commander said the term Anzac had "transcended the physical meaning to become a spirit, an inspiration which embodies the qualities of courage, discipline, sacrifice".
