Sir Paul McCartney inspects a photograph taken by his late wife Linda at the first major UK exhibition of her work, which opens this week at the James Hyman Gallery in central London.

The display has taken the former Beatle three years to put together and will mark the tenth anniversary of his late wife's death. Linda McCartney died in 1998 following a battle with breast cancer.

Born Linda Louise Eastman in 1941, she began her career as a music photographer in the US. Her subjects included the American singer Janis Joplin, captured here in San Francisco in 1967.

Linda met Sir Paul in America while taking pictures of the Beatles in 1967. This photograph of John Lennon was taken in London the following year.

Sir Paul has said the exhibition of his late wife's work is "long overdue" and will show a "sensitive selection" of works. Some private images which have never been seen in public figure in the display.

Sir Paul worked with his daughter Mary, also a photographer, to put together the collection, which includes this shot of Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon taken at CBS Studios in New York in 1966.

Among the works on display are these two montages. The first shows Jim Morrison, lead singer of the Doors, on stage in New York in 1968. The second shows boxer Muhammad Ali fighting on television in 1975.

Linda McCartney would later become a member of rock group Wings alongside Sir Paul, whom she married in 1969. The photograph being inspected here was taken in Jamaica in 1972.

The exhibition also includes landscapes and family photographs, among them this shot of Sir Paul and Linda's daughter Stella. It runs at the James Hyman Gallery until 19 July.
