There has been a final day of campaigning in Zimbabwe ahead of Saturday's general election. Supporters of Robert Mugabe wore masks of the president at his final rally outside Harare.

President Mugabe - who has been in office for 28 years - repeated his claims that his opponents are puppets of the West.

His rivals - including Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the main faction of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) - were also making final appeals to the electorate.

Both he and his fellow challenger, Simba Makoni - a former senior member of Mr Mugabe's government - say they are worried the poll will be neither free nor fair.

Amid galloping hyper-inflation, the economy is expected be a key election issue. This man has just bought a loaf of bread - costing 15m Zimbabwean dollars - from a black market dealer.

The government has threatened to slash prices of goods by over half in an effort to control the problem, forcing many shop owners to withdraw products to stave off losses.

But Mr Mugabe blames the economic problems on the West and bases his campaign on the redistribution of land seized from white farmers.

Nevertheless, so far the election has been relatively peaceful, leading some opponents of the president to hope they might finally see him out of office.
