In pictures: Free after 35 years in jail

After spending 35 years in prison in Pakistan, Kashmir Singh received a rapturous reception when he crossed the border into India after being pardoned by President Musharraf.

Mr Singh had tears in his eyes and a bemused expression as he returned home carrying only a plastic bag with his meagre belongings across no-man's land.

The freed prisoner had not seen the light of day for much of his incarceration. A former policeman from the Indian state of Punjab, he was convicted in Pakistan in 1973 for spying.

Even though he had not seen his wife for more than three decades, Mr Singh still had the obligatory bureaucratic routines to complete before he was finally reunited with her.

But when you have been waiting more than 30 years a few extra minutes do not matter. "I thank my wife for doing so much for my release. She took care of my children," he said.
