Local people and rescue teams have begun a desperate search for people buried by landslides in central Java, Indonesia.

The village of Tawangmangu was one of those disfigured by the disaster. Some of the town's residents were found dead under the sludge.

Dozens of people were reported dead or missing, after several places across Java were engulfed in mud.

Indonesian troops were called in to help search for survivors or for bodies. But they struggled to reach some places cut off by flooding.

Thousands of people have been forced to seek shelter after their homes were buried or washed away.

A provincial official said the landslides were the worst to hit the region in quarter of a century.
