In pictures: Riots in Venezuela

1 of 7
Venezuelan troops have used tear gas in Caracas to disperse thousands of students opposed to President Hugo Chavez.

2 of 7
The protesters - many of whom threw stones at police - were demonstrating against a series of proposed constitutional reforms.

3 of 7
The students are demanding the postponement of a referendum on the changes, which include a measure to allow Mr Chavez to stand for election indefinitely.

4 of 7
Authorities broke up the protest outside the headquarters of the country's electoral council.

5 of 7
Police also used water-cannons to disperse the protesters, many of whom had taken part in a similar rally on 24 October.

6 of 7
Despite the often heated confrontations between the protesters and the police, there have been no reports of serious injuries.

7 of 7
President Chavez's police force will remain on high alert until December, when the referendum on his proposals is set to take place.
