Zoological Society of London researchers have captured images of endangered species in unprotected areas of forest in Sumatra, Indonesia - such as this Sumatran tiger.

An entire family of elephants triggered a camera trap to capture this image. The researchers' survey covered 2,000 sq km of degraded forest, and focused on large mammals.

Conservation groups fear the future of the areas' inhabitants, like this clouded leopard, will be threatened if plans to develop palm oil plantations go ahead.

Animals such as the Asiatic golden cat do not adapt well to areas settled by humans. The ZSL team hope the survey will help prove that the area needs to be protected.

The images captured by the camera traps have helped the researchers understand the number and range of species in the Indonesian forest areas that are earmarked to be cleared.
