Palestinians return to ruined Lebanese camp

Most of the 40,000 Palestinian refugees in the Nahr al-Bared camp fled during the fighting. Some are returning, to find nearly every house badly damaged and many destroyed.

The UN estimates that up to 85% of the Nahr al-Bared camp's infrastructure has been fully or partially destroyed. Three months of fighting ended in early September.

The Lebanese army has granted permission to about 400 families to return to Nahr al-Bared.

Nearly 500 people died during the fighting. Lebanese officials have warned that the militants buried an unknown number of their comrades in mass graves inside the camp.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA) is seeking a relief fund of more than $50m to provide for those displaced from the camp and for those who are returning.
