The leaders of South and North Korea have ended a historic three-day summit in Pyongyang by agreeing to seek a formal end to the 1950-1953 Korean War.

The joint statement signed in the North Korean capital commits the two sides to seeking the help of the US and China in establishing peace on the divided peninsula.

Afterwards, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, left, and the North's Kim Jong-il celebrated with a formal lunch and a toast for the cameras.

Mr Roh recorded his visit to the West Sea Flood Gate in Nampo, just outside the capital, by signing the guestbook.

... while South Korea's opposition said the declaration was insufficient because it did not contain firm commitments to nuclear dismantlement on the peninsula.
