Zoo unveils its history in pictures

The history of London Zoo is revealed in images published online for the first time, including this shot of a bear meeting a tiger cub, dated April 1914.

The images, including this llama-powered carriage ride in 1920, were unearthed and restored by workers at the Zoological Society of London.

The pictures have been restored and released to mark ZSL's 180th anniversary.

Copies of the images are being sold to raise extra money for the organisation's conservation work around the world.

ZSL's Caroline George said: "Going through the photos and slides in the library has been a reminder of the zoo's astonishing history."

Ming Ming the giant panda, pictured here in 1992, was sent back to China after failing to mate with male panda, Bao Bao.

Guy the Gorilla is one of the zoo's most famous inhabitants. Pictured here in 1977, his life is commemorated with a statue.
