A massive steel and concrete security fence is being erected in Australia's city of Sydney, ahead of next week's summit of Asia-Pacific leaders.

The 5km-long (three miles), 2.8m-high (9.2ft) fence will shield the 21 leaders, including US President George W Bush, from planned rallies by thousands of protesters.

Concrete slabs are being put at the base of the barrier to protect against terrorist attacks.

Some 5,000 police and troops have been put on patrols, as part of Australia's biggest security operation.

They are being backed by navy patrols around Sydney's harbour, and also fighter jets and helicopters.

The Sydney Opera House - the venue of the summit - and the surrounding area will be closed to the public.
