Hokkaido is Japan's second largest island but only 5% of the country's population live here. Russian researcher Evgeniy Podolskiy sent his photos and views of this unique place.

"The main city on the island, Sapporo, is the youngest city in Japan. Until 140 years ago, there was nothing but wilderness. Now 1.8 million people live here," Evgeniy Podolskiy said.

"Sapporo's population is very young and it is one of Japan's most desirable places to live for young people. Not surprisingly, the city is famous for its vibrant night life."

"Hokkaido is most of all known for its spectacular nature. This is the Yoteizan volcano near the world famous ski resort Niseko. This island is the Japanese Siberia - cold and empty."

"The Kuril islands, subject of a dispute between Russia and Japan, are not far away. Last August Japanese fishing boats entered disputed waters, triggering a fresh diplomatic row."

"The waters in the area are rich fishing grounds. That's where most of Japan's seafood comes from. If you ask where to go for the best sushi, the answer would be Hokkaido."

"Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced last week that the venue for the G8 summit in 2008 is going to be lake Toya in Hokkaido."

"The national park Shikotsu-Toya is a popular tourist destination. There is an abundance of hot springs and this is the stinking Hell Valley."

"There are several volcanoes on the island. Sixty years ago, a volcano appeared out of nothing. It was kept secret by the authorities, as they thought it was a bad omen for the war."

"Mount Uzu's last eruption in 2000 prompted the evacuation of the whole area. The destruction is preserved in the form of an open air museum."
