Polling is taking place amid tight security. Despite President Olusegun Obasanjo warning that violence would not be tolerated there have been some incidents.

Fears of violence and rigging are most pertinent in the oil-rich, troubled Niger Delta. Reportedly, some polling stations in Port Harcourt did not have booths for people to vote in secret.
