Lawyers across Pakistan have boycotted courts and taken part in rallies - some resulting in violent clashes with police - in protest at the suspension of the country's top judge.

Police in Lahore used batons to try to break up a march by black-suited lawyers in support of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry.

Protesters chanted anti-government slogans - and some threw bricks and stones at police - as they tried to stage a sit-in protest outside Lahore's high court.

Some protesters burnt effigies of President Pervez Musharraf, who removed Mr Chaudhry over alleged misuse of office. The lawyers say the president's action is unlawful.

Some in the legal community fear Mr Chaudhry may have been dismissed because of his firm line on government misdeeds and human rights abuses.

More than 20 lawyers were hurt after policemen wielding batons tried to break up the protest in Lahore.

The cities of Peshawar, Karachi and Quetta were also the scene of court boycotts and street demonstrations.

In Islamabad, riot police tried to prevent opposition leaders marching to Mr Chaudhry's home. The allegations against him are to be considered by the country's top judicial council.
